Your day, drawn as a line

Dayline draws where you went and how far, automatically, every day. There is no start button and nothing to remember: recording starts when you move and ends when you stop.

What makes Dayline different

You don't have to try to keep a record. The day stays as it was.

  • No start button

Carry your phone as you always do. Dayline notices when you leave, follows the way you take, and closes the trip when you arrive. It works with the app closed.

  • Walking, running, cycling, driving

Dayline works out how you are travelling and colours the line to match. Each day shows the distance and time for every mode.

  • Every day, kept

The History tab shows a month at a glance; open any day to see its path and timeline. Switch the calendar to paths and every path of the month comes together on one card.

  • Your record stays on your device

There is no account and no sign-in. Your movement record is stored on your device, and only the shape, distance, duration, and date of a day you choose to post go to the server. The map and coordinates are never sent. You can delete the record on your device at any time.

  • Share the line of a day

In the Everyone's lines tab, pick a day you want to post and post it as a line, and look at other people's days. You can leave likes and comments, and read posts in other languages in translation.

The day screen — the colour of the line shows how you travelled.

How a day becomes a line

There is nothing to do. Just have your day.

  1. A person leaving home with a phone in their pocket, a green line drawn behind them

    Step out, and it starts

A walk or a run: once you leave home and start moving, Dayline notices and begins to draw.

  2. A person driving a car, with a green, orange, and blue line trailing behind

Get in the car, and it carries on

Take the wheel and the line changes colour. Walk, run, switch to a bike or a car: it stays one line.

  3. A person on a sofa looking at the day's path on their phone

In the evening, look at your line

When the day is over, where you went and how far is there as a single line. See it on a clean grid or over a map.

Frequently asked questions

For anything else, send us an email.

Do I have to press a button when I start exercising?
No. Dayline has no start button and no stop button. Recording starts when you begin to move and ends when you stay in one place. Just carry your phone as you always do.
Does it record with the app closed?
Yes. You don't need to open the app. For that, location access has to be set to "Always" ("Allow all the time" on Android), so the path can be drawn even while the app is closed.
How does it tell walking, running, cycling, and driving apart?
Dayline works out how you are travelling and shows it in the colour of the line. The motion (physical activity) permission is optional; when allowed, it is used to tell walking, running, cycling, and driving apart.
Will it drain my battery?
Location is used only while you are moving. While you stay in one place, Dayline waits, so it is built to be left on all day.
Is my movement record sent to a server?
Not unless you post it yourself. There is no account and no sign-in, and your movement record is stored on your device. When you post a day to Everyone's lines, only that day's line shape, distance, duration, date, and caption go to the server; the map, coordinates, and times of day are not sent. Your record is never used for ads or statistics.
What is Everyone's lines?
It is where people show one another the line of a day. Choose a nickname, pick a day you want to post, and its line shape, distance, and duration are posted. The map and coordinates that would show where you went are not. You can delete a post at any time.
Where do I see past days?
The History tab shows a month at a glance, with a small line for every day you moved. Open any day to see its path and timeline. Switch the calendar to paths to see every path of the month on one card.
Are there goals or badges?
No. There are no goals, no badges, and no streaks. Dayline may show how today compares with yesterday or with your week, but there is nothing to hit; it keeps the day as it was.
Is it free?
Yes. Dayline is free and shows one ad below the tab bar. Anonymous usage statistics, such as which screens and settings are used, can be turned off in Settings.
Where do I send questions or suggestions?
Write to zaco.labs@gmail.com. Zaco Labs, the makers of Dayline, read every message.
